Allen Cardoza, a host on L.A. Talk Radio, discussed the topic of American consumerism with Dr. James. A Roberts, the author of a new book on excessive consumption. The show focused on problems related to spending more than we earn and suggested groundbreaking solutions to reorganize our lives.
“Shiny Objects: Why We Spend Money We Don’t Have in Search of Happiness We Can’t Buy” is a book about the change in America’s relationship to earning and spending. It suggests 3 ways to measure our financial well-being. The first way is to estimate how much money we have for short term emergencies, the second way is to estimate how much we have for long term emergencies, and the third way is to estimate how much credit card debt we have accumulated. If we are not doing well, we need to evaluate our earning to spending ratio.
Dr Robert’s helpful advice can help us to correct the problems that arise from excessive consumption. His practical advice can free us from the cycles of financial stress. His latest book, “Shiny Objects,” discussed the shiny object syndrome. It is far more than a polemic against capitalism or a critique against spending more than we earn. In essence, his advice, if followed, will lead to a more productive life, which will, in turn, lead to a happier life.
As an author, Dr Roberts has more than 75 academically published articles, and he is currently a Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He has worked as a Professor of Marketing since 1991. Top marketing journals, as well as psychology periodicals, have published many of his research articles, and he has won two awards for “Paper of the Year.”
Thousands of students, both undergraduates and graduates, have benefited from the professors teachings on the social consequences of our spending behaviors. In fact, he has even received awards for excellence in teaching. For the past 15 years, Dr. Roberts has been a keen student of the psychology of consumerism. He has largely focused on the cultural impact of marketing on consumer behavior.
