How To Remove Automotive Rust

Your car’s paint will peel at some point and you will notice that there are rusted areas underneath the paint. Rusting happens due to oxidation and this is simply termed as a corrosion of iron and its alloys. Since cars are quite expensive we want to know how to better care for them to serve us longer. Read on to know how you will be able to salvage those areas of your car which are subjected to rust.

First step is preparation. We start with sanding the affected area as well as the surrounding area using a 150-grit sand paper. We sand it until we get to the metal part of the body. Sand the surrounding area properly so as to even out the edges in and around the area so that it will be one continuous area.

And then we go on to the repair. It is basically filling in the holes or gaps left by the rust. You can buy an automotive filler and use it to cover up these holes. After letting it stand to dry, we then make sure that it is level by sanding and smoothing the area using a 120-grit sand paper. Your goal is to level it with the car’s normal surface. After leveling it, you have to again subject it to sanding using a 120-grit sandpaper to be able to smooth it thoroughly.

And the final step of the process is to do the painting and finishing. Use some tape to cover up the surrounding area which you will not be painting. Start with spraying three light coatings of primer on the affected area. Let it dry and as soon as it dries out, that is the time you spray on the next coating. After letting it sit to dry for a couple of hours, you can then spray on at least three to four coatings of paint onto the affected area. Allow the paint to dry. It is highly recommended that you let the paint stand out to dry at least a whole day to ensure that it is dry indeed.

After this use a microfiber cloth and grease to create a sheen on the dried area. Then wash the car and apply wax on it to make sure that the car achieves that shiny look. There you have some simple steps to take to make your car look brand new. Make sure that you act as soon as possible on the rusted parts because it can easily affect other areas as well.
